Under the direction of the Interpreter Services/Communications Manager, the incumbent serves as a medical interpreter for patients, physicians, and all other hospital staff as necessary. Supports the operations of the department. The incumbent will facilitate communication across language barriers. Relays medical information between speakers of two different languages in compliance with all hospital policies and procedures, appropriate credentials, proficiency assessment and all other regulatory requirements specific to assignment. Job Description: Helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse patients. Communicating with patients as necessary. Communicating with the manager and coordinators as necessary and assist with special projects as assigned.
1. Establishes Relationship with prospective client.
o Introduces self as the qualified interpreter by naming the approved language(s) to all parties.
o Selects appropriate mode of interpretation for each situation. Interprets with highest degree in accuracy. Demonstrates knowledge of assessing meaning of culture for individual clients and client groups.
o Selects appropriate interpreting mode according to interpretation needs as per Standards, so that message is accurate and complete: Consecutive, Simultaneous, sight, relay, and summarization.
o Maintains a professional demeanor at all times during an encounter and while communicating with staff members: Mimics staff facial expressions when appropriate
o Assures that all parties understand each other by using teaching back techniques when appropriate (i.e. discharge instructions).
2. Helps facilitate successful delivery of services to linguistically diverse patients.
o Only provides Sight Interpretation translation under special circumstances, such as assisting client with completing Medical History Forms, Discharge Instructions, and Billing Reports.
o Refrains from explaining medical meaning and needs to encourage patient to communicate directly with the provider.
o Sets the tone so that session can be effectively and accurately conveyed from target language to English and back and forth: Appropriate eye contact, when possible crates a triangle with seating arrangements, inform all parties in their respective language by managing a clear and concise introduction.
3. Communicating with the Communications Manager and Coordinator as needed.
o Utilize Outlook for communication between Coordinator and Manager. Views calendar for scheduled assignments. Responds quickly to interpreter requests.
o Ability to multitask, flexible to meet scheduling needs and handle unpredictable change.
o Maintain interpreter skills by continuing education classes such as webinars and workshops.
o Assists with special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience Minimum Required
• Fluency in English and one or more foreign languages, both oral and written.
• 2-4 years of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medically vocabulary (including vocabulary of medical specialties)
Education Minimum Required
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to provide all required credentials, training and competencies required for specific language in addition to English.
Education Preferred/Desired
• Bachelor's degree - or Certified Medical interpreter
• Training Minimum Required
• Language Proficiency Assessment.
• Certificate of Completion -Medical Interpreter Training Program.
Special Skills Minimum Required
• High level of customer service and a positive approach
• Familiarity and ability to work with diversity or cultural backgrounds of patients to be served.
• Good interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Knowledge of computer systems.
• Understands and abides by hospital policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent,non-discrimination and by interpreters code of ethics and standards of practice.
